Pre Symposium Events

  Pre-Symposium Visit to Hatfield House
   
Thurs 30th Sept

One day visit to Hatfield House, home of the Marquess of Salisbury, and a fine Jacobean house and garden in a spectacular countryside setting. (http://www.hatfield-house.co.uk) Participants will see the Marquess’s private map collection, presented by Robin Harcourt-Williams, and tour the house. Accompanying persons will see a few maps and visit the house and garden.
Price £30 per person includes transport. Lunch is not included in the price, but available in the café/restaurant.
Numbers visiting map collection limited to 25, overall numbers 40. Priority to those who have not visited the collection before. Reservations to be made on the Symposium Registration Form

 

  Pre-Symposium Tour to Hereford
 
Friday 1st Oct Travel to Hereford via Waddesdon Manor, home of the Rothchild family, (http://www.waddesdon.org.uk) for a tour of the house. This has one of the most exceptional collections of French 18th century decorative arts and English portraits. Paintings, porcelain, carpets, books, drawings, textiles, enamel and majolica provide a feast for the eye. Continue to Hereford. Accommodation at the Green Dragon Hotel located in the centre of the town (http://www.green-dragon-hereford.co.uk).
 
Sat 2nd Oct Visit to the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library, Hereford Cathedral. (http://www.herefordcathedral.org). Free time in Hereford.

Return to London via Berkeley Castle, home of the same family for the last 900 years, (http://www.berkeley-castle.com). It is an outstanding example of mediaeval domestic architecture, a Norman fortress with an enclosing curtain wall, built and enlarged through the mediaeval period and beyond into a secure, comfortable and substantial home.

  Cartographic Walk round the City of London

 

Sat 2nd Oct This walking tour is led by Yasha Beresiner, a former master of a City Livery Company and approved City guide. There will be a relaxing (1½ hours) lunch stop in London Wall.
