Rodney Shirley's Bibliography

 MAP-RELATED PUBLICATIONS by Rodney Shirley 1979 - 2012

‘Impressive’ is the word which comes to mind when browsing through Rodney Shirley’s list of published works in the history of cartography.

The list spans more than 30 years of love, hard work, and dedication to the subject, particularly when one is aware that much of the writing and research was done at the same time as holding down a full time job in business. I am sure that Rodney would have no idea how many hours, days and weeks he has spent on research for these publications, let alone the time spent on the writing itself. His love of collecting maps and atlases, and latterly title pages, has obviously been a huge part of his life.

The crowning glory of his literary achievements is undoubtedly the book The Mapping of the World; early printed world maps 1472-1700 which has appeared in various editions and has become the bible on maps of the World. It has also made Rodney a household name among collectors, librarians and historians of cartography.  Updates to this work are available on the Virtual Antique Map Fair site at www.antiquemaps-fair.com

As Editor of The Map Collector magazine for 20 years (1977-1997) I was proud to see that I had published one of Rodney’s first articles `An Unusual Collection of Maps in a pre-Overton Atlas’ in 1979  although he had written five parts of his work on the maps of the British Isles for R.V. Tooley’s Map Collectors’ Circle even earlier.

Rodney has been a member of IMCoS since its inception in 1980 and its first President so it is entirely fitting that he chose us as a vehicle to publish his bibliography and despite his 80-odd years I sincerely hope he will continue to write and comment on maps for many years to come.
