25th International Symposium
Guatemala City, Central America
February 5th, 6th & 7th 2007

Hosted by Universidad Francisco Marroquin Guatemala

Our annual International Symposium moves to February from the autumn in order to take advantage of the better weather at this time of year in Central America. The Symposium is titled "Geographic Expressions of the New World". It presents an insider's look at exotic cultures and ancient civilisations, with the flora and fauna of the area providing a beautiful backdrop to your study of this region.

Symposium Programme

Learn about:

  • The ancient Maya world when maps were not made on paper
  • The indigenous cartography of the Spanish conquest
  • Political intrigues and geographic descriptions in Spanish Colonial America

Bring your family and friends for a unique visit to this country. They do not have to be members of IMCoS and they will share your interest and enjoyment.

This schedule will be posted in 2006 together with the Registration Documentation.

IMCoS will be using top hotels at exceptionally good prices. In Guatemala City there is something for every budget.

Post Symposium Tours          

Tour 1:   Guatemalan Highlands

February 8th, 9th & 10th 2007

  • Chichicastenango - shopping in the fabled Indian market town
  • Lake Atitlan - boat tour to Kaqchikel villages along the shore of this crater lake
  • Antigua - preserved Colonial city, first planned capital on the Americal continent;
    World Heritage site since 1979
  • Visit a coffee plantation - private visit to a farm and mill in full harvest

At Lake Atitlan a 4 star hotel is exclusively reserved for IMCoS. In Antigua IMCoS will be using a 5 star hotel in the restored ruins of Santo Domingo Monastery.

Tour 2
:   Ancient Maya Ruins of Tikal and Yaxha

February 11th & 12th 2007

Tikal
  • city state that flourished from 300 to 750 AD
  • temples and palaces buried in the rain forest
  • Princess Leah's hideout in Star Wars!
 
Yaxha
  • Occasional rival to Tikal on the shores of a jungle lagoon
  • climb temples and swim in the lake
  • scene of CBS "Survivor" series in 2005!

IMCoS will be staying at a jungle lodge with pool on the shores of a lagoon.

First class local transportation will be provided for these unmissable tours.

Guatemala in Context

Visitors will experience perfect weather and meet friendly local people. Our hosts can point us to excellent restaurants with great dining. IMCoS will have access to top in country medical facilities should the need arise. All in all Guatemala is the place for cartographers and friends to be in February 2007.

Should you wish to extend your visit then further tours can be arranged through IMCoS' agent. For example:

Rio Dulce - for tpropical relaxation
Copan - for archeology
Eco tours into cloud and rain forests
Volcanoes from afar or hiking close up
